Tips on keeping your Komondor Clean
There is nothing more difficult than keeping a white corded dog clean. We will share some of the tips we have learned over the years. I hope you find them useful.
Our Komondors drink from the Anti Splash watering hole. This unique water bowl prevents the beard and chin of a Komondor from getting wet and dirty as well as the floor area where the water bowl is kept. You can opt for the larger and more elaborate Buddy Bowl. This bowl holds up to 1/2 gallon of water.
We bath our Komondors with Dawn Ultra dishwashing detergent for routine maintenance. It is easy to rinse out of a corded coat. However, before a show the best shampoo I have found to get a Komondor clean and white is Orvus Horse Paste. Be careful and fully rinse the coat as soap residue left on the sking can/will cause hot spots.
A wet corded coat will take days to dry. Mildwew is the most common cause of coat damage. We purchased a
Master Blaster and blow the excess water out of the coat while some owners use Shop Vacs to suck the water out of the cords. ( However, we also use the Blaster to blow debris out of the coat before it becomes a part of the cord) After removing all the excess water, we place the dog in a crate surrounded by box fans. We elevate the crate using plastic soda crates. This allows for air to move under the dog and aids in drying quickly.
It is relatively easy to wash away the dirt, however the debris picked up in the yard is a nightmare. While you can purchase Body Suits online for your Komondor, I have found they are heavy. bulky and expensive. I was able to make a lightweight covering for less than $10.00. I am not a seamstress and even I found this to be easy. See picture below:
